Transformer Moisture Absorber（Breather）

Also known as a respirator or silica gel tank, the transformer breather is one of the essential accessories of a transformer.

FunctionIt connects the transformer body to the outside atmosphere, maintaining pressure equilibrium between the interior and exterior of the transformer, so as to prevent oil injection caused by excessive internal pressure. Meanwhile, the built-in desiccant absorbs moisture and impurities from the air entering the transformer, ensuring the excellent electrical performance of transformer oil.

StructureIt is typically composed of a glass cover, upper and lower head castings, an oil storage cup, upper and lower isolation nets, a connecting flange, silica gel and transformer oil.

Working PrincipleWhen the oil temperature rises, the oil expands in volume, and the gas in the conservator air chamber is discharged into the atmosphere through the breather. When the oil temperature drops, the oil contracts in volume, and the outside air is drawn into the air chamber through the breather. The incoming air is dried and filtered by the desiccant inside the breather during the process.

Classified by silica gel type: White silica gel breather and indicating silica gel breather

Classified by function: Standard breather and double breather

Classified by connecting flange: Three-hole (circular) breather and four-hole (square) breather

Maintenance Tips

Regularly check whether the desiccant has deliquesced and changed color. Replace the indicating silica gel in a timely manner when the discolored portion approaches 1/5 of the total volume.

Replace the transformer oil in the oil cup at the bottom of the breather once a year, and keep the oil level at approximately 1/3 of the cup capacity.
