Tap changer

The tap changer (also known as a tap changer or tap changer) of a transformer is a device used to regulate the output voltage of the transformer. It adjusts the output voltage by changing the effective number of turns in the transformer winding, thereby adapting to the voltage variation requirements of the power system. The following are the main functions of tap changers:

Adjusting output voltage: The voltage in the power system may fluctuate due to changes in the load. Tap changers adjust the output voltage by changing the number of winding turns to ensure that the voltage remains within a stable range.

Compensation voltage drop: When power is transmitted from a transformer to a distant load, a voltage drop occurs. Tap changers can compensate for these losses by increasing the output voltage of the transformer, thereby ensuring that the voltage at the load end meets the requirements.

Improving the flexibility of the power system: Tap changers allow for voltage adjustment without interrupting power supply, which is crucial in situations where there are frequent load changes.

Optimizing the operation status of transformers: By adjusting the tap changer, transformers can operate under optimal working conditions, thereby reducing energy loss and improving efficiency.

According to different operating modes, tap changers can be divided into on load tap changers and off load tap changers:

On load tap changer: allows tap adjustment during live operation of transformers, typically used in situations where frequent voltage adjustments are required.

Off load tap changer: can only be adjusted when the transformer is powered off, suitable for applications where voltage adjustment is not frequent.
